The Mid-Atlantic Range is an underwater mountain range of the Atlantic Ocean and Artic Ocean. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is part of the global mid-oceanic ridge system; the ridge is the mountain range where tectonic plates are moving apart along a boundary as magma rises from the Earth's mantel. This magma then heats up and the heat cause the curst on the rifts expand creating the ridges. As the tectonic plates keep moving apart, the Atlantic ridge keeps growing at this point at the rate of 5-10centimeters per year.

The North American and Eurasian plates separate to form the North Atlantic Ridge.
Africa is 2,400 km from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and North America is 3,000 km from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge at its closest point. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is part of the longest mountain chain in the world. Most of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is under water, but parts of the elevation extend above sea level.
It extends northward to its juncture with the Gakkel ridge, northeast of Iceland.
