Settlers in the northern colonies were mainly motivated by religious freedom. In most of the northern colonies, church and state were still combined. The southern colonies, on the other hand, were mainly populated by settlers who came to the New World to seek financial gain.

Most colonists lived in established settlements along the eastern seaboard of North America, such as the New England colonies, the Middle colonies, and the Southern colonies. These regions offered opportunities for agriculture, trade, and economic growth.
Northern colonies were the most rebellious of all the colonies (especially Massachusetts). These were the most patriotic colonies and the least loyal to Great Britain. To more geographic characteristics, the northern colonies had rough and poor soil, cold weather during the winter and warm during the summer, lots of lumber and fishing, etc.

As to the question of whether the 13 colonies could have declared independence if they weren't unanimous, answers will vary. Most might state that independence would be difficult without the support of all thirteen colonies, but some might say independence without consensus was still possible. For instance, colonies that objected could be absorbed into Canada or find a way to peacefully co-exist with those that seceded.
