The last explorer known to have sailed in 1501 was the Italian navigator Amerigo Vespucci. He embarked on a voyage to the New World that year, during which he explored parts of the northern coast of South America. Vespucci's voyages contributed significantly to the understanding of the geography of the Americas, and he is credited with recognizing that the lands discovered by Christopher Columbus were part of a separate continent.
