The latest that existed by itself was MS-DOS 6.22. For a while, however, Windows was partially integrated with DOS, so these MS-DOS versions could be extracted. Windows 95 revision 1 identified as MS-DOS 7; Win 95 rev 2 and Win 98 were MS-DOS 7.1 (which had support for the FAT32 file system), and Windows ME had MS-DOS 8. You can extract the DOS from Win 9x (not ME) by modifying the file MSDOS.SYS, changing the line saying "bootgui=1" to "bootgui=0" and setting the config.sys SHELL statement to the command.com that came with Windows. Someone has done this and packaged it; google "MS-DOS 7.10" and you will find it.Also, any time you format a disk in Windows newer than ME, you get the option to make a MS-DOS startup disk. This is MS-DOS 8. By making such a disk and using the utilities from MS-DOS 6.22, you can have a working MS-DOS 8.
