There are a lot of motorcycles (actually mostly mopeds) in Thailand - less than one per person though - it is common to see 3 to 5 people on one small 100cc moped here. Cars are very expensive as they are subject to very high import taxes (up to 400%) and wages are very low - especially outside of the capital (as low as 5000 baht a month in the provinces on average for a working person - around 120 pounds GB or 170 dollars US) - so most familes rely on bikes. Second hand cars hold their prices too.
