to be a godparent
You cannot change your Godparents.
A godparent is a child’s representative at the baptism. A baby is unable to understand or respond during the service, so it’s your job to make certain commitments on their behalf.
It depends on the religion in question, but in Catholicism the godparents are the witnesses to baptism and you can't retrospectively change who witnessed something.
parents, godparents, friends, family and religious community
before you have a communion you asksomeone close to you if they want to be your godparents. and there job is if there parents die the godparents will take care of him/her.
Technically, there is one or two "sponsor" godparents - if two, one is female and the other male. Both need to be baptized Catholic, age 16 or older, and Confirmed. Their names are formally entered into the church baptism register. Any more than two is not official; however if tradition dictates more than two the others can be called godparents but names are not entered. You should check with the local baptizing priest to see what he thinks.
You can, but usually the Godparents and relatives give gifts at baptisms.
The Godparents promise at Baptism to assist the parents in raising a child in the Catholic faith.
Godparents are there simply to reinforce the teachings of the parents and their promise to bring up the child in the way of Christ. The godparents are like teachers, supporting the parents in what they do, but the real task of bringing children to Christ rests with the parents.
You renew the baptismal promises made by your Godparents for you at Baptism. You are, basically, 'confirming' those promises and your own desire to be a Catholic.
During the Baptism ceremony, godparents are asked to commit to helping the parents live out their faith responsibilities to their children. Godparents, then, are very special in the life of their godchild. They are people whom you choose with great care, for they will be examples and role models for years to come. To help parents make wise choices for the privilege of being godparents, the Catholic Church has specific requirements.
