Cadbury was the first

Although chocolate has been enjoyed for thousands of years (the Mayans enjoyed drinks made form cacao beans), the first brand of chocolate bar was probably Cadbury.

A timeline:

1849: John Cadbury made a chocolate bar.

1875: Milk Chocolate invented by Nestle.

1879: Lindt creates a chocolate bar that snaps in pieces.

1900: Hershey's chocolate bar invented.
