"the pasilicca located on Harvey st downtown St. John's NL"

is not the correct reply to the question. For one thing, there is no such spelling as 'pasilicca'; the word is 'basilica' and for this building, it is capitalized: The Basilica--and the rest of the name is "...Cathedral of St. John the Baptist". It is not, however, the oldest church in the city of St. John's, Newfoundland, Canada. The Basilica opened in September, 1855.

(By the way, the province's full name is 'Newfoundland and Labrador' but the first name is the island part of the province; St. John's is the capital city, and is on the southeast side of the island).

An older church is St. Thomas's Anglican Church, also known as the Garrison Church because the garrison of English troops used It was built between 1835 and 1836. It is also on Mlitary Road, at the west end of that road. Across the street, the same road becomes Harvey Road (which is why the previous response was confused).

There are a number of old churches in the city; some are the oldest buildings of a particular denomination. St. Thomas's Church is the oldest Anglican church in the city; it was built twenty years before the Basilica Cathedral of St. John the Baptist.

St. John's is a city with a rich history, and two leading historical writers are Paul O'Neill and Patrick O'Flaherty...they have written good histories about the city, and there are other histories available.

I moved to St. John's more than three decades ago and love it. It's beautiful and interesting and has a great deal to offer, culturally, athletically, socially, musically, environmentally, and to business people. You can't lose by visiting this old city.
