According to agricultural archeologists, the oldest grain crop seems to be spelt. Spelt is a forerunner to wheat and is/was used for bread products. Barley is another ancient crop food and is mentioned many times in ancient writings. The date palm is the most ancient of the tree crops since the Egyptians discovered that it has male and female trees. The palms were hand pollinated.
