Steel is a superhero from DC Comics. He is also known as the "Man of Steel" (but Superman coined that name, and so his name was shortened to simply Steel).
The character started out as the ordinary man Doctor John Henry Irons, weapons engineer for Amertek Industries. He became disgusted with his work and faked his own death to escape the business, hiding out in Metropolis and starting a job as a construction worker. Obviously he wasn't very good at it, because he fell off a skyscraper and nearly died---but Superman swooped in to save him!
When he asked Superman how he could repay him, Superman told him to "live a life worth saving." And thus Steel was born! And actually helped/stepped in for Superman at times, before splitting off to get his own comic series.
