Espresso - as in the method for brewing coffee - originated in Milan at the very beginning of the 20th Cenury. Luigi Bereza filed the first patent for an Espresso machine in 1901. He then sold the Patent to Desiderio Pavoni, who in 1903 started to market the first commercially produced Espresso Machines.

These original espresso machines forced steam through the coffee grounds. With experimentation over time, it was discovered that a better extraction could be got by forcing hot water through the grounds instead - and the first machines which worked on this principle were in use in Italy the 1930's.

The word itself is Italian for express - meaning "forced out under pressure" - although it is also used in the sense of fast!

How do you make a espresso?

To make a good cup of espresso take 1/4 cup of espresso grounds or French roast coffee for a stronger espresso flavor. Add 1/2 cup of cold water into a coffee machine and brew. You'll get 1/4 cup of freshly brewed espresso. If you're looking for an espresso machine that does everything for you including grinding the espresso beans, brewing the espresso, and making the froth, the Delonghi Magnifica is one of the favorite espresso machines.
