The internet started as a military and academic application to allow the transfer of data between bases and universities. It was called ARPANET. ARPANET was expanded upon and grew into the NSFNET project in the early 1980s. From there, NSFNET grew into a major portion of the backbone of the internet.

What is the origin of the term 'to surf the web what is the origin of the term to surf the net?

I would assume that the term migrated from the term "Channel Surfing", in reference to wandering through television channels. The origin of the computer term to surf the net from what i can work out comes from the term the internet as a net is cast to catch websites which have been placed on the internet and nets are usually meant to be cast in water so it seems logical that this is where the term derives from .
