There are several stories, but all tell that the winged horse was born from the blood of the Gorgon Medusa, slain by the mythical hero Perseus. In one legend the blood fell into the sea and was mixed with the foam, the mixture giving birth to Pegasus.

Where did Pegasus the winged horse get his name?

There seems to be no legends pertaining to the naming of Pegasus. According to the Greek poet/writer Hesiod the name Pegasos was the word for "spring" or "well" and this is in accordance with myths concerning Pegasus that reported that a spring would come forth wherever its hoof touched the earth. A strict rendition of the word probably finds its origin in pihassas which means "lightning", or related to pihassasas, the god of lightning. Again, Hesiod gives account of this possible origin by mentioning Pegasos carried the thunderbolts for Zeus.
