In the eleventh century, William the Conqueror brought the Talbot hound into Great Britain. A white scent hound, the Talbot (now extinct) is thought to be a more recent ancestor of the modern day beagle. The black and tan Irish Kerry Beagles are also considered another possible link in the evolution of early beagles. A small hunter similar to the Bloodhound, Kerry Beagles may be the reason for the strong scenting abilities of beagles today.
The history of Beagles dates back to the 1700's. Beagles were first used for the great hunt because they are one of the best hunting dogs there are. They also were used for sniffing out clues like in Sherlock Homes but these dogs are also very active so they were soon made a legal pet.
The information at the American Kennel Club about the breed and how is got its name of Beagle states:
"The origin of the name "Beagle" may have been derived from the French term "be'geule," referring to the baying voice of the hounds when in pursuit of game, or possibly the diminutive size of the hound. "
The French word for "begueule," meaning "open throat," may be a reference to the beagle's distinctive bay.
The true origin of beagles has been lost as it is an extremely old breed some say it goes back to 500 b.c. but the current combination has been adapted in the 19th century (by England)
Beagles originated in England, where they were used to hunt small animals such as rabbits.
Beagles origonated from england, but the french named them beagle meaning gaped throat.
