Commonly known as the daffodil in English, the narcissus is based off of the Greek legend of Narcissus, a man who died because he was so enraptured with his own image in a pool of water that he couldn't pull away. The narcissus flower later grew where he had died.

Geographically, the narcissus flower is considered native toe the Mediterranean region, but there are some species in central Asia and China. They are generally cultivated in the Channel Isles, Sicily, Great Britain, and Holland. The ones found in America today were brought from Europe by the early settlers.
