The origins of the practice (i.e. the first civilization that performed this act) are relatively unknown, but its intent was to show reverence or good-naturedness to the recipient of the gesture. It was seen as connecting the person's mind, mouth, and soul to their treatment of the recipient which was a wholesome form of interaction. It was also seen as bringing the Divine (above the head) into the Heart and since the Divine created everybody, it promoted equality between the gesturer and the recipient.
