The Carthaginian Navigator Hanno, made a voyage along the coast of North Africa about 500BC and referred to some 'wild, hairy people' in the region. Thus the word was thought to be taken from a local dialect or was the name of a local tribe of hairy people. In the early 1800's the American Missionary, Thomas Savage, borrowed the Greek word Gorillai and applied it to the Apes
