"Habitation surnames" began to become bestowed upon persons based upon the names of the towns or settlements that they were living near. Such is the case here: Derbyshire and Warwickshire each had settlements called Heathcote. There is a certain Walter Hathecok listed in over in Essex, in the Hundred Rolls of 1273 A.D.
