But Doctor Schlessinger doesn't see things that way: regardless of her own behaviour, she should still be listened to when she gives advice to others.
The term 'ad hominem' is a Latin phrase meaning 'at the man' (the idea is that the attack is 'at the man', and not 'at the idea'). Quintilian - the Roman Grammar and Rhetoric teacher - uses the phrase (Institutio Oratoria.X), so clearly the expression was already well known in Roman times.
