To say the word "Hades" was scary. Although he ruled the underworld, he was not considered death itself. if you died in ancient Greece, your soul was said to have ventured to the underworld. Your family would place a coin in your mouth to pay for the passage across the river into the underworld. Once you came into the underworld, you would not come out. (a few exceptions were made in Greek mythology such as Hercules)
