Subaru is the automotive division of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. FHI was formed after WWII from Nakajima Aircraft (formed in 1917) when the company could no longer produce military equipment because of the treaty with the USA. They used the parts from the aircraft to produce the Fuji Rabbit scooter. The profits from the scooter allowed FHI to produce bigger and better things from barges to trains, to busses, to generators and construction equipment. In 1958 the Rabbit was dropped and FHI made an automotive division called Subaru, producing the Subaru 360, and the rest is history.
