It is not considered an academic subject. Maybe that is why it was so popular with the kids, somewhat akin to ( older audience) the Current Events club in high school which was largely keyed to the tune of the New York Times. The Childhood put the fun in fund raising. They had various collection facilities such as so-called Mitre Boxes which resembled half-pint milk cartons and were Orange. These held coins. they also had coin-slotted advent calendars- an idea picked up and modified by secular charities. finally, there were magazines, stamp (albums) ( dealing with saints) and in the classes all sorts of mission-oriented Maps, sectional and regional charts, the feeling was this was real, it was like Mission Impossible of sorts- or an Avalon Hill war game- sans the battle grounds. A class I was in allegedly (adopted) a child in Bolivia and he was named John James. For the Birds!
