Stealing less than $500.00 worth of merchandise is a Class A misdemeanor punishable by up to 1 year in the county jail and/or a fine of up to $1,000.00. If the shoplifting case is charged as a municipal violation rather than a state misdemeanor, the typical range of punishment is up to 6 months in jail and/or a fine of up to $500.00.

Whether a person receives diversion, probation, or a reduction in charges will depend upon the prosecutor, the strength of any defenses the person may have, and the individual's criminal history.

1-3 years in prison for first time offenders, maybe 5 depending on how much the car costs. Also a large fine so if you don't wanna get caught, then don't do it in the first place...

Added: If you take it across state lines it becomes a federal offense.

What is the punishment for larceny in different states?

All states have LARCENY as an offense on their statute books. There are two types of LARCENY - - PETIT (pronounced 'petty') and GRAND. Petit Larceny is a misdemeanor (punishable by jail for up to one year), and GRAND which is a felony (punishable by prison for a term exceeding one year). The dollar value of the stolen merchandise is the guiding factor between the misdemeanor charge and the felony charge, but this value can (and does) differ from state-to-state. You would have to check your own state's law to determine the amount.
