They have to retire the month following their 64th birthday but usually retire well in advance of this, so as to not impede the promotions of subordinates. However the Secretary of Defence can defer it until the month after the officers 66th birthday and the president can defer it until their 68th birthday. If your promoted to 5 star General, you remain on the active list for life.

There are entirely too many variables to answer for this. To know, you would have to know his time in service, and time in grade. The time in service determines the percentage of his base pay, the time in service and time in grade determine what his base pay was.
