Islam in France
Islam is the second religion in France with 5 to 8 % of the population.
The majority of the Muslims in France are Arabs, from the former french colonies of Maghreb Algeria Morocco and Tunisia). But, there are also non-Arab Muslims (Berberes, Turks...).
However, Islamic is not a accurate word to define the French Muslims. Islamism is more a political movement related to Islam (sometimes radical and extremist). The great majority of Muslims in France have accepted the concept of Laïcité.
Islamism in France.
A minority part of Muslims can be qualified as radical, integrist, fundamentalist or even terrorist. It can be active, and at times, can provide violent acts. Islamism is the political projection of Islam based on the Islamic law and the Charia.
This movement is in contradiction with the french law, for which no confusion must be made between public life and religion. It is, obvioulsy a problem for french to deal with those extremist political movements.

∙ 15y agothe number of Muslims in France is controversed. A French law prohibits any census based on race or religion.
The most frequently cited figures, adopted by both Governmental and religious authorities, is 5 million.
The national Institute of Demographic Studies (INED) says the figure is actually around 3.7 million, while other demographs put the figure to around 7 million.
