The African socialist movement came into existence after European socialist movements. Socialism originated in Europe during the 19th century, but only became influential in Africa after the second world war during the period of decolonization. African socialism was less about socialism, meaning an alternative to capitalism, and was more about anti-colonialism, anti-imperialism and national development.
