Some of the lesser obvious symptoms of an alcohol problem include the unusual or unexplained need for money, injuries which the person won't or cannot explain, and unexplained change in personality and attitude.

Alcohol poisoning is an emergency. Rather than look for symptoms which may not be present, if a person who has been drinking heavily is unconscious or can't be awakened they are at risk of dying and you should call 911.

Some symptoms that may or may not appear are:

  • Vomiting
  • Seizures
  • Irregular or slow breathing (less than eight breaths a minute)
  • Blue-tinged or pale skin in caucasians
  • Low body temperature (hypothermia)
  • Stupor - when someone's conscious but unresponsive
