That is Venus, playing its traditional role as "Evening Star". Venus passed its maximum "extension" - its angular distance from the Sun - last month, and is starting to swing around behind the Sun. By mind-March, it will be difficult to see in the evening sky.
After a couple of months, Venus will swing out from behind the Sun, and become the "Morning Star" as it rises before the Sun does each morning. It repeats this morning star-evening star cycle every 10 months or so.

You are seeing the planet Venus near the crescent moon around February 28 or March 1 2009. You know it's Venus, because it is the 3rd brightest object in the sky, after the Sun and Moon itself.
The planet Venus has just passes the "inferior conjunction", when it goes between the Sun and the Earth. Venus now appears as a VERY bright object low in the eastern horizon just before sunrise. This is probably what you are seeing. Venus will rise earlier and earlier for the next 2-3 months as it races ahead of Earth in its orbit; then it will start to rise later and later until it goes behind the Sun about 4 months from now.
Seeing how there is only 360 days in a year and their is approximately 30 days in a month their is about 5 months is 159 days.
