On a 2005 Forrester you need to take out 8 or 10 plastic screws in the underneath splash shield then you can turn it out of the way giving you excess to oil plug.
As you face your vehicle it is on the right side underneath car just about 10 inches from the wheel. You will need to romove the plastic shield underneath to get to it or see it.

Underneath the car, there is a large plastic shield. It is easier if you take shield down by taking the bolts out and the one push-pin clip in the middle of it. If not taking shield down, oil filter is straight up inside the square cut hole in the shield.
Heat shield. As the car gets older, it degrades, loosens and rattles. Simple cure is to have the mechanic put a new one on. Generally a low cost repair.
