He was not. He did play a soldier in Oliver Stone's Platoon.
There are a couple places where one could go to view videos of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon. For instance, YouTube and the official Marines website offer many videos for the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon.
If you are thinking of the rifle team they are called the silent drill platoon
No, MPs do not have to be officers. The Military Police are a sub-set of the Marine Corps and is a specialized MOS. You just have to qualify for the program and pass the course.
The Marine Corps hierarchy starts with the Marine Corps as a whole, led by the Commandant of the Marine Corps. Below that, there are divisions, which are made up of several regiments. Each regiment consists of multiple battalions, which are further divided into companies, platoons, and squads. The hierarchy continues down to fireteams, which are the smallest operational unit in the Marine Corps.
There are several ranks of sergeants. Buck sergeants (three chevrons) and staff sergeants (three chevrons with one rocker) led squads, usually of about twelve men. A platoon had four squads. There was a platoon sergeant (three chevrons, two rockers), the top enlisted man in a platoon. The platoon commander was supposed to be an officer, a second lieutenant or a first lieutenant. Platoon leaders got killed a lot. Platoon leader was the single most lethal job of the war. When the lieutenant went down the platoon sergeant took over, until a new lieutenant was assigned. So, squad leaders reported to either the platoon sergeant or the platoon commander, and the platoon sergeant reported to the platoon commander, unless he had become the platoon commander. If the platoon sergeant was leading the platoon he met with the captain or the first lieutenant commanding the company, with the other platoon commanders, when officers were called to company HQ to discuss plans or receive orders.
Yes just like any military sponsored club. Civil Air Patrol is looked favorably upon by the Naval Academy and and college with Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps, it will probably help you get into Marine Corps Officer Candidate School and Platoon Leaders Class.
