There were about 9,000 black soldiers, spies, and support staff that fought with the Patriots: the American forces. A black person by the name of Crispus Attucks was particularly opposed to Britain's dominance in the American colonies. He volunteered as a Patriot soldier, and is held by historians to be the first American killed at the Boston Massacre.
More black people volunteered to fight for the Patriots than white people did.
I believe you are referring to his speech he gave entitled "Meaning of the Fourth of July for the Negro." Douglass was simply pointing out the inconsistencies and hypocrisy of the white American population. They were celebrating freedom while oppressing those in slavery.
