Storms are a natural result of unstable conditions in the atmosphere. The exact cause depends on the kind of storm. Storms redistribute heat in the atmosphere, and in doing so maintain balance. They take heat from the warmest parts of the planet, and bring it to the coolest parts. They also produce rain, which is essential to life on land.

Scientists use weather radars, satellites, and computer models to carefully track storms, determining their starting point, direction, and speed. Doppler radar is particularly effective in providing real-time data on storm systems, while satellites provide a broader view of storm movement. Computer models help incorporate this data to make forecasts about the behavior of storms.

What is the connection between severe storms and dew point?

Dew point is the temperature at which water vapor condenses from air of a given moisture content. When moist air gets lifted it cools and eventually reaches its dew point, causing the moisture to condense and form clouds. If there is enough energy in the air this condensation releases enormous amounts of energy that can power severe storms.
