The poison called halahal or kalakuta emergered during the churning of the ocean (known as samudra manthan) which was a great threat to the three worlds (heaven, earth, and hell). To save all living beings Lord Shiva drank the poison, which turned his neck blue, giving him the name Neelakanth (the blue-necked one).

As the story in mythology goes, once the lesser Gods and the Asuras thought to obtain riches from the sea by churning it, particularly the nectar which could give immortality. They chose the biggest mountain, Meru, as the dasher (churning tool). Since no rope was as long and as strong to move it, they requested Lord Vishnu's bed-snake (Lord Vishnu is supposed to rest on that), Sheshanaga to be one. The churning yielded many nice things and some unwanted things. Among the good, a seven-headed horse given to Indra, a jewel given to Lord Vishnu, the moon, wine, Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealths) given to Lord Vishnu (he was the major beneficiary), a wish-fulfilling cow given to sages Kashyapa, Jamdagni, or Vasishtha (there are different versions in mythology), a never-fading flower given to Lord Vishnu, a wish-fulfilling tree given to some sage, a seven-headed white elephant given to Indra, and the doctor for the Gods (Dhanavantari).

But then, it also resulted in the appearance of a very toxic poison, Halahala. Halahala made Gods, Asuras, and all living beings in the world very ill. The Gods and Asuras found no succor from it. In the end, they requested Lord Shiva to help. Lord Shiva accepted to drink the poison but before the poison could go below his neck, his spouse, Goddess Parvati fearful of the adverse effects of Halahala on Shiva, grabbed Shiva's neck and did not allow the poison to reach his stomach. Because of the effect of the poison, Lord Shiva's neck became blue. This is remembered as saving act of Shiva to all, Gods, Asuras, and humans.

These are mythological stories, and even hindus do not take them as historical truths. But these stories have their morals. The Asuras do not get anything in the story, none other than a few drops of nectar which accidently fell on two Asuras. Otherwise the whole pitcher of nectar was given to Gods dishonestly. So check before you posit your faith on anything, that is the moral of the story.
