Simple chemisty.

N2 and O2 are present in the atmosphere at about 78% and 21%.

They normally don't react, but an engine gets hot enough to do so.

They make NO which then reacts with more O2 to make NO2.

NO2 his hit by high frequency solar energy which causes it to split into NO + O

NO and NO2 are greenhouse gases, along with CO2, and they are also TOXIC to us humans. Also, ozone in the troposphere (where we live) is actually a pollutant. The free oxygen, O, can combine with more O2 to make O3, ozone....which is a pollutant in the troposphere.

Also NO2 SO2 and SO3 all combine with water in the atmosphere and make it ACIDIC! This is acid rain.

This is an example of photochemical smog. For another example, look up London smog. that is ONE cause, there are MANY.
