Wanaka is a ski area town of varying population, due to seasonal activities. pop - 10 000 to 60 000 depending on season. The nearest villages are Lake Hawea, Albert Town, and Lugate, which are all rather small - high hundreds each. The nearest significant town is Cromwell, of similar size to Wanaka. Queenstown is also nearby, but access is much more difficult because of mountain roads.
The urban population of the Lakes District is about 20 000, divided mainly between Queenstown and Wanaka. Queenstown (including Arrowtown) probably accounts for 2/3 of that total.
