Nuns are also known as female religious, or sisters. they are vowed to the religious life, but are not, strictly speaking clergy- they cannot perform sacramental functions such as Masses, but do perform yeoman service in the teaching and health care apostolates as well as missionary activities. The so-called White sisters performed a variety of roles in mission stations- really community center hubs- in developing countries and colonies such as the former Belgian Congo.
