In English you call him: leader of the mosque. But in Arabic you call him: Imam ul-masjid. However, most people just call him : Imam.
The Islamic prayer leader is called the imam. However, the imam does more than lead prayer. It is a religious leader role. They may be looked at as community leaders, give guidance, and lead ceremonies. The responsibilities of the do differ some between Sunni and Shi'a imams. In Sunni, the imam leads formal prayers (Fard), and often Friday sermons. In Shi'a, the imam is considered to have impeccable character, be free of sin, and is to be followed in all teachings.
Ayatollah is the name of a Muslim leader of the highest order. The current worldwide population of Muslims is about 1.6 million.
The Muslims generally stand on Prayer rugs while offering prayer. The Leader (Imam) also stands on the prayer rug at a level with his class. (Jama'at). While delivering the Friday sermon, the Imam (leader) stands on a platform (called Mimber) having three steps. The Islamic religious leader is called the Imam, however in Islam God has said that everyone is equal and that their is no leader, the Imam is mainly used to teach people about the Islamic faith, and is also used to lead prayer, but he is not seen as a leader as everyone is seen as equal. The Religious founder in Islam is The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
There is only one position in a mosque (Mahrab) where the Imam (leader) stands and leads the prayer.
It is a piece of carpet, a rug designed for one person to stand on it and offer prayer. It is also called Jaai Namaz. Generally, the Imam (leader of prayer) stands on it in front of the followers and leads the prayer.
