Near term : Anyone's guess.

Long term : Look out below for both of them. They are two of the biggest debtors in the world and they have gotten to the point where more borrowing and/or more printing of money are their only ways out. We all know what the prospects are even for a good corporation that has been managed into that kind of pickle. There are new warnings out this first week of November in the Washington Post that the bailout for AIG has been going badly. Not a good sign for what is now an 80% government-owned enterprise with tentacles everywhere.
