Eukaryotic genes have non-coding introns inserted between the coding exons, and these introns must be spliced out of the primary mRNA transcript before translation can proceed. Prokaryotes do not have spliceosomes, thus eukaryotic genes would be transcribed with the introns intact, and translation by the ribosome would proceed on the primary mRNA transcript, resulting in non-functional proteins.
