Hate crimes laws can be used as excuses to take freedom, punish certain types of speech, or turn non-crimes into crimes, and misdemeanors into felonies.
Another problem they have with such laws is that they send the message that some people are more important than others or deserve more rights. While such laws are supposed to help level the playing field, they can also be used as a weapon to oppress certain people.
