backfiring is caused during deceleration by the un-burnt fuel that gets sucked back into the cylinder. This best way to prevent this get the ECU re-tuned, or try to avoid deceleration by engine braking. engine braking can be damaging to motor and timing belt. Try to use the brakes more often when going down hills.

bad plugs or wires i just had this problem to or it could be a leak in the exhaust
Is it a backfire, or a pop. civics with free flowing exhaust has the tendency to POP when you shift gears. If you are backfiring its because of a stray spark, or a timing problem, wires crossed.
It depends
There's no governor on a Honda Nighthawk 250. A Honda 250 Nighthawk is a motorcycle, not a lawnmower.

I, too, would like to know the answer! I have a 1993 Polaris Trail Boss ATV with the 250 cc engine... it tends to backfire when letting off the throttle.
Your car is running too rich.
Incorrect ignition timing or damaged valves would make a 95 Honda Odyssey sputter and backfire. Backfires are directly caused when ignition occurs at the wrong time.
A Honda 250 recon will top out at 48 mph
Sounds like it's out of timing.
if it backfires when driving most crank sensors cause this
running lean can cause your 400ex to backfire ..if it backfires on deceleration its lean ...if it pops on acceleration its running rich.====carb issues
