What is the problem with a 1989 Gran Prix if I go to start it and the ignition just turns completely loose and nothing happens?

Ignition switch should be connected to a rod that runs down the steering column to the actual switch at the lower end of the column. Check to see if this rod has become disconnected or broken

Is the car in park? Do the lights turn on? If so are the dim, or bright? If no lights you likely have a dead battery. From there I would check fuses. Good luck.
