Weed is one of the safest illegal drugs in the US and other parts of the world.

It is almost physically impossible to overdose on it. However that doesn't mean that it is healthy by any means. Occasional use won't have any long term effects.

Long term use (Years of smoking) can lead to respiratory problems, memory and learning problems, and decreased fertility.

Long term use by minors may cause slight side effects and a THC overdose is serious but in-frequent. Short term side effects may include extreme dry-mouth known as "cotton mouth", unconsciousness, and total loss of direction, i.e. don't go some where confusing

Well, if you smoke enough of it, for many years, you could get lung, mouth, or throat cancer. Chronic marijuana use also causes short-term memory problems, although this usually clears up once the person has (permanently) quit smoking.

Answer

Please note that the average percent of THC in marijuana in the 60's and 70's was under 2%. Currently it's just under 10%. (See 2009 link below.) This means that today's marijuana is way more potent than it used to be...and way more dangerous. The effect of two or three joints a day in say 1974 would be like one today.

Answer

That is a misguided and erroneous conclusion. The studies that were done on marijuana in the seventies used exceptionally low-grade marijuana. Yet those flawed studies are STILL being used to promote the erroneous idea that marijuana in the sixties and seventies was much weaker than today's marijuana.

The marijuana that is most commonly smoked today is no more potent than the marijuana people smoked in the sixties and seventies.

Source: see the Related Link below (Hemp & Marijuana: Myths & Realities).

Furthermore, even if marijuana were more potent than it was yesterday...so what? THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana) does not become more dangerous if it's used in a more concentrated form. Hash/hashish is concentrated THC (around 20% THC content), and everybody knows hash is no more dangerous than marijuana.

As a comparison, industrial hemp has a THC content of 0.5%. And it is literally impossible to get high from smoking industrial hemp. So, marijuana that has a 2% THC content...that is just so incredibly low, you would have to smoke about an ounce of it in order to feel anything. I know I wasn't around in the 60s and 70s, but I have a very, very, very hard time believing that most people in the 60s and 70s really smoked marijuana that had a 2% to 4% THC content, since it is nearly physiologically impossible to get high from weed that has a 2% to 4% THC content. That CNN article is using flawed statistics.

It's true that super, super high-grade weed ("skunk") is a recent invention. But super-high-grade weed is not available to everybody. Super-high-grade weed represents only a tiny fraction of the marijuana that is out there. As I said above, the marijuana that is most commonly smoked by people today is no stronger than the marijuana that was most commonly smoked by people yesterday. Just because there is stronger weed available today, does not mean that everyone is smoking it! There is still plenty of low-grade weed ("schwag") available today.

So, yeah, if you measure really, really low-THC weed (schwag) from the seventies, against really, really high-grade weed (skunk) from today, of course there's going to be a big difference. But it doesn't mean they didn't have good weed back then (not super-skunk, but good). And it certainly doesn't mean that there's no low-grade weed available nowadays. I have personally seen some dirt-nasty schwag in my day. I've also seen some skunk so potent it practically glowed in the dark.

But like I said...so what? Higher THC concentration does not make marijuana any more dangerous! And anyway, if you have low-grade weed, then you smoke a whole, whole lot of it, and if you have high-grade, you only smoke small amounts. That's just how it works.

That guy in the CNN article says he's worried that "while experienced marijuana users may limit their intake of potent marijuana, young and inexperienced users may not moderate their intake." Yes, they will. You know why? Because high-grade marijuana is about five to six times more expensive than low-grade marijuana! You CAN'T smoke too much high-grade marijuana, because nobody can afford it! Especially not teenagers! Super high-grade marijuana can cost up to $700 an ounce, while super-low-grade marijuana can cost as low as $120 an ounce.

People who say that high-grade weed is dangerous because people might smoke too much of it obviously have no idea what they're talking about. Obviously, they have never smoked pot. The truth is that there's really no such thing as being "too high" on marijuana. After a certain point, you cannot get any higher.

There's really no such thing as being "a little bit high" on weed, nor is there really any such thing as being "too high" on weed. You're either high, or you're not. There isn't very much in-between. For really high-grade weed, just a few hits gets you to that "high place." With low-grade weed, you will have to smoke a gigantic blunt, in order to get to that same "high place." And even inexperienced marijuana users can tell when they're high and when they're not. They won't get "too high," because after a certain point, they won't be able to get any higher.

Actually, it's much, much easier for inexperienced users to gauge how high they are, than it is for experienced users. When you're a pothead, you're accustomed to being high all the time, so you don't notice it as much. When you're an inexperienced marijuana user, you get SO high, and you feel SO abnormal...there's no way you would smoke too much.

Marijuana is dangerous because smoking it can cause cancer. To say that it's "dangerous" because of its THC content is just misleading, irresponsible, and scientifically uninformed. THC certainly is not good for you, but it doesn't kill people, any more than caffeine kills people.

Smoking marijuana causes cancer. Therefore, low-grade marijuana is actually much more dangerous than high-grade marijuana, because when you have low-grade marijuana, you have to smoke a huge amount of it in order to get high. And more smoking means a greater risk of cancer.

I also find it hilarious that the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy would condemn high-potency marijuana, when the U.S. government grows some of the most potent marijuana on Earth.

And that third link ("1999 info American Council") is so full of false information, that it has no credibility whatsoever. It actually brings up that long-debunked myth that marijuana is a "gateway drug," and tries to pass it off as the truth! Anyone with a logical mind knows that there's no such thing as a gateway drug (see the Related Question below).

Basically, this "pot is dangerous now because it's stronger" argument is just a way for aging hippies to justify their hypocrisy. They smoked tons of pot when they were young, but now that they have children, all of a sudden it's "dangerous." Yeah, right. Or, maybe you just can't stand the idea of your children doing what you do, instead of doing what you say.

Marijuana is one of the safest therapeutic substances on the planet... It's brother plant, hemp, is also a very useful plant for manufacturing hemp products like rope, twine, and cloth.

Marijuana is known to cause some side effects - but they are cited as being "no less dangerous than alcohol," according to President Barack Obama. Marijuana may cause short-term memory loss, and there has been a correlation between IQ loss during mid-20's if you use it during your teenage years, however this study has not been completely verified, as a correlation does not necessarily mean the information has been proven, and this information is subject to change! However, as of now, it is considered to be a factor in a loss of IQ if used during adolescent years.
