Zoos are bad because of all the animals locked up in cages. The rules state that all animals should be released after one year but most zoos don't follow these rules. If animals are released after one year though they are not in cages the soon die of starvation because the cannot hunt.

because they are.

It would depend on your viewpoint about how animals are treated. Zoos can provide mankind an opportunity to protect endangered species which allows controlled breeding, maintaining healthy animals, allowing people the opportunity to see animals that they would normally not see within their lifetime.

The downside to zoos is the lack of freedom of the animals. Continued captivity could possibly "bury" the animals natural instinct for survival such as the hunting skills of a lion or tiger. If the species numbers becomes reduced, there is always the danger of inbreeding reducing the strengths and dominant traits for the survival of the species. The worst case scenario for zoos are those without money or passion to properly take care of the animals. We have all seen the commercials where animals are kept in conditions so contrary to their natural habitat that the animals are literally suffering. It appears that sometimes Man chooses not to take care of animals under their dominion and it is hard to understand why they choose to capture the animal then mistreat it.
