Once you have a merchant account, you will be equipped with a credit card terminal, a "black box" machine that sits in your store next to your cash register. If you use a point-of-sale system ("POS") the processing software will be integrated into that system. If you are accepting cards on your website, the customer will type in their card information and submit their payment to you. There are also mobile terminals for accepting payments where there is no telephone line or internet line to plug into. These terminals are useful for delivery drivers, festival and fair events, etc.
However you enter the card information, it is then transmitted to a gateway service that contacts the credit card company or bank and verifies the card is valid and sufficient funds are available for the purchase. If the funds are available, the charge is processed and an approval returned to you.
Most card processors will pay you daily for the prior day's sales, direct-deposited into your business checking account. They will debit out their rates and fees for providing the merchant account every month and you will receive a comprehensive statement of all transactions.
