The reason you were charged was because although you areallowed to DEFEND yourself in an ongoing assault being committed against you - - when the other person ceases the assault you may not, then, exact retribution. (sort of like a "one-free-punch" rule) It's not fair but it IS the law. If you can prove the other party attacked you suddenly and without provocation and you were reacting to the un-provoked attack the court MAY take that into account. If you have witnesses to the event, be sure you bring them with you.
