Mapped network drive. In Windows networks, an external resource has the form "\\MyServer\MyFolder\MySubFolder\MyFile.doc". The folder part, "\\MyServer\MyFolder\MySubFolder", can be assigned ("mapped") to a drive letter, for example, "M:"; in that case, you refer to the document as "M:\MyFile.doc".

If you use often certain shared netfoders you have to locate them every time when you need to. Mapping allows you to connect such folders, and represents it as local hard drives. It saves a lot of time in a long run (it takes some time to get to use it).

What is the purpose of genetic mapping?

Genetic mapping is mapping genes to a specific location on a chromosome. therefore the purpose is that it helps to tell where on the chromosome a mutation is. For example if scientists find were on a chromosome a gene for a certain mutation, they can conduct gene therapy to replace it with a normal version of that gene. Basically it just tells scientists the location of a mutation so they can fix it more efficiently.
