The United States has a Federal Supreme Court. Every state has a Supreme Court, although in some states it is called an Appeals Court. The US Supreme Court has the constitutional responsibility of solving problems between differences between states. It does very little of that. Most states work out their own problems.
The primary job of the US Supreme Court is to interpret the Constitution and ensure challenged federal and state laws are constitutional. This often takes the form of making a final decision when two different US Court of Appeals Circuit Courts have made different decisions concerning the constitutionality or application of a federal law. For example: The 10th district court of appeal ruled that a prosecutor could not make a deal with a criminal and keep it secret if the criminal would testify against another defendant. Another district court made a different decision. The United States Supreme Court decided the decision of the 10th circuit was the correct one.
The US Supreme Court also reviews federal questions that arise in cases originally tried and appealed in state courts.
