A row is a horizontal arrangement of cells. Each row is numbered. Often headings are put in rows, so there is one at the top of different columns. In this way a row can be used a a heading row or a title row. In the same way, a heading for each row can be put along a column, indicating what is in it.

For several (rather obvious) reasons

  • To make the data more readable by adding titles
  • To make data more variable by having 2 dimensional data
  • To give more area for laying out the spreadsheet
  • Mostly because it would be incredibly limiting to have just one column for data, labels, etc
