Data circuit-terminating equipment (DCE) is a device that connects to the leased line provided by the telco. The term circuit-terminating refers to the fact that a leased line is sometimes called a data circuit, or simply a circuit, and the CSU/DSU sits at the end of the circuit. The DCE also provides clocking to the data terminal equipment (DTE). The DTE is a device that needs to send data over a circuit. Routers act as DTEs because they need to send IP packets, encapsulated in data link frames, over WAN links.
DTE devices in the sense we have PC (Computers), router,Serial Printers, PLC's, Video Cameras, Video Recorders, Video Editors like this we use any of them depending on our requirementDCE devices in the sense hub, bridge, switch, modem etc are dce devices we usei hope it is useful to you........
a serial interface on a router is basically used for WAN communications. we generally connect to other routers through internet using serial interface. In a lab scenario we generally emulate WAN connections by connecting the serial interfaces of the routers using a cable called DCE/DTE cable.

The Internet links LANs and WANs together.
Core links should be the fastest and most reliable leased lines in the WAN
HDLC
if the LAN is connected to another LAN over a wide distance using point to point links then it becomes part of the WAN (but it doesn't become a WAN by itself).

Replication between sites is compressed to optimize WAN bandwidth utilization.
